World Environment Day 2025: Focus on Plastic Pollution

World Environment Day is the largest international day focused on environmental awareness. It is celebrated every year on June 5. This day encourages individuals, businesses, and governments to take steps to protect our environment. In 2025, it will be hosted by the Republic of Korea. The theme for this year is ‘End Plastic Pollution.’

Plastic pollution is a major concern. Each year, over 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced worldwide. Half of this plastic is designed for single use. Sadly, less than 10% is recycled. An estimated 11 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in our lakes, rivers, and seas. This is enough to weigh as much as 2,200 Eiffel Towers!

Microplastics, which are tiny plastic particles, find their way into our food, water, and air. Studies show that each person consumes over 50,000 plastic particles every year. Many more are inhaled. This pollution harms human health and biodiversity. It affects ecosystems from mountain tops to ocean floors.

To tackle this crisis, urgent action is needed. World Environment Day 2025 joins the UNEP-led #BeatPlasticPollution campaign. This campaign seeks to mobilise communities worldwide to find and advocate for solutions. The day aims to raise awareness about the impact of plastic pollution. It encourages people to refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink plastic use.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has led World Environment Day since 1973. It serves as a global platform for environmental outreach. In 2025, the Republic of Korea will once again host this important event. The country has made significant progress in improving air and water quality. It is committed to reducing plastic waste through a comprehensive strategy.

Jeju Province in Korea has been selected as the host location. This province has set a goal to be free of plastic pollution by 2040. It has implemented a system for waste separation and recycling. This system ensures higher recycling rates and more efficient waste management.

The need for action is urgent. If we do not act, global warming could rise above 1.5°C. This increase could lead to a 50% rise in air pollution exposure within a decade. The amount of plastic waste entering aquatic ecosystems could triple by 2040. Every small action counts. We can make a difference by participating in this year’s World Environment Day activities.

As the world prepares for the global treaty to end plastic pollution, it is essential to stay informed. Countries are making progress towards this treaty. The treaty will be significant for our planet’s future. The next negotiation session will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, in August 2025.

In conclusion, World Environment Day 2025 is an opportunity to come together. We can work towards a cleaner, healthier planet. Let us all join the fight against plastic pollution and protect our environment for future generations.
