This year’s celebrations will take place in Jeju, Republic of Korea. This province has set a goal to become plastic pollution-free by 2040. They have also introduced a disposable cup deposit system, showcasing a model for sustainable practices.
In addition to local actions, World Environment Day serves as a global platform for discussions on environmental policies. In August 2025, countries will meet to negotiate a global treaty to end plastic pollution. This treaty will be the most significant environmental agreement since the Paris Agreement in 2015. It aims to create a safer environment for future generations.
The urgency of tackling plastic pollution has never been greater. Without action, experts predict that plastic waste in aquatic ecosystems could nearly triple by 2040. Furthermore, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines may increase by 50% within the next decade.
The World Economic Forum is highlighting innovative solutions to tackle plastic pollution. Many organizations and businesses are beginning to shift from producing large amounts of plastic to designing out plastic waste altogether. This change is crucial for both businesses and public health.
