Weather Update: Heavy Rainfall Alerts Across India This WeekWeather Update: Heavy Rainfall Alerts Across India This Week

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall across many states in India this week. This is due to an active low-pressure system. Regions like Delhi, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Kerala are expected to experience heavy to very heavy showers. Rainfall is set to increase in these areas, with temperature drops likely.

The IMD has issued a red alert for three districts in Kerala: Idukki, Malappuram, and Wayanad. Other districts have been placed under orange and yellow alerts. This means heavy rain is expected in the coming days. In Ernakulam, residents reported waterlogging in homes. In Kozhikode, the Kakkayam Dam’s water level is at 757.50 metres. Because of this, a red alert was issued, and excess water will be released into the river.

In Wayanad, the Kalloor River has overflowed. Landslides have also been reported in the Chooralmala area. Authorities have warned about possible floods along the Kabani River. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to stay alert.

The rainfall forecast is as follows: for June 27 and 28, orange alerts are in place for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur. Yellow alerts apply to Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and other districts on various dates.

Wind speeds of up to 50 km/h are expected along with the rainfall. Areas such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Kozhikode may face these conditions. In Thrissur and Palakkad, moderate rainfall with winds up to 40 km/h is expected.

Due to rising water levels, the shutters of several dams in Idukki have been opened. This includes the Lower Periyar and Kallarkutty dams. These actions are necessary to manage the excess water and prevent flooding. In the Panamkootty Chappath region, severe flooding has been observed.

In addition, the Banasura Sagar Dam will also have its shutters opened to release water downstream. The District Collector has warned residents in low-lying areas to be cautious. Heavy rainfall is expected for the next few days, and local authorities are taking precautions to ensure safety.

The Kerala coast is on high wave alert. Waves of 3.1 to 3.3 metres are expected until June 27. Fisherfolk and those near the sea should be careful. Disaster management authorities are urging the public to follow official advice and avoid dangerous areas.

In other parts of India, the IMD forecasts active monsoon conditions. Central, eastern, and northeastern India will see continuous rainfall. Areas like Jharkhand, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh are also on alert for heavy rain from June 25 to June 28. West Bengal and Sikkim will face downpours on June 25, 28, and 29.

In northwest India, states like Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana are expected to receive heavy showers this week. In the west, Maharashtra, Goa, and Gujarat will see intense downpours.

People are advised to stay tuned to weather updates and prepare for potential disruptions. With the monsoon in full swing, it is important to remain cautious and safe during this rainy season.
