On June 9, 2023, Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, laid the foundation stone for the Global Centre of Excellence on Millets in Hyderabad. This new center aims to enhance millet production and research, helping farmers and startups in the millet value chain. During the ceremony, Chouhan highlighted the government’s commitment to promoting millets, which are considered superfoods. He stated that millets play a crucial role in ensuring food security and improving nutrition for India’s growing population.
The foundation stone was laid at the Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) in Hyderabad, which will serve as a key hub for millet research and innovation. The facility will include state-of-the-art research laboratories and skill development centers. The government has allocated ₹250 crore to establish this center as part of the PM Shree Anna Yojana, which promotes millet farming and consumption.
Chouhan emphasized the importance of agriculture in India, noting that it contributes 18% to the national GDP and is the main livelihood for nearly half of the population. He mentioned that the agriculture sector saw a growth rate of 5.4% in the last quarter, reflecting the government’s focus on agricultural development.
He shared that under the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan initiative, the government aims to connect scientific research with farmers’ needs. The program involves 2,170 teams of scientists who will visit villages to advise farmers based on local conditions. This approach seeks to ensure that research translates into practical solutions for farmers.
During his visit, Chouhan interacted with farmers in Telangana, discussing their challenges and advancements in agriculture. He praised farmers for adopting innovative farming practices, which have increased their production and income. He remarked, “The farmer is the true scientist,” highlighting the need for researchers to listen to farmers’ needs.
The minister also addressed the importance of maintaining grain reserves and ensuring fair prices for farmers. He outlined four key objectives of the government: ensuring national food security, providing nutritious food, preserving soil fertility, and promoting sustainable agriculture.
Millets have gained attention as a nutritious food option, and the government aims to enhance their production and consumption. Chouhan mentioned that promoting millets aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a healthier India. He expressed confidence that the Indian Institute of Millets Research would play a leading role in this global initiative.
The establishment of the Global Centre of Excellence on Millets marks a significant step towards enhancing India’s agricultural capabilities. It is expected to foster innovation, support farmers, and contribute to the overall growth of the agricultural sector. Chouhan concluded with a commitment to supporting farmers and ensuring that they benefit from the government’s initiatives. He stated, “We are formulating policies that will ensure maximum benefit for our farmer brothers and sisters.”
