Weather Alert: Heavy Rains Expected Across Several Indian States

This week, many regions in India are preparing for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall as multiple monsoon systems develop. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for various states, including Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Meghalaya. It is important for residents in these areas to stay alert and take necessary precautions.

The IMD predicts that this July will be wetter and cooler than usual. Most parts of India may experience above-normal rainfall and below-normal temperatures. However, some areas, particularly in Northeast and East India, may see less rain than expected. The IMD states that the average rainfall for July 2025 is expected to be above normal, exceeding 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA). Typically, July sees around 280 mm of rain.

Above-normal rainfall can benefit agriculture and water resources. However, the IMD warns of potential hazards such as flooding, landslides, and disruptions to transport. Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of Meteorology, advised the public to use IMD’s early warnings for safety.

As for temperatures, the IMD forecasts that minimum temperatures may be normal to below normal in many parts of the country, while rainfall is expected to be above normal. Some regions, like Northeast India and Southern Peninsular India, might experience below-normal rainfall, which could actually turn out to be above normal.

In June 2025, India received 9% more monsoon rainfall than average. However, East (-16.9%) and South India (-2.7%) faced deficient rainfall, while Northwest (42.2%) and Central India (24.8%) saw surplus rain. The rainfall pattern in June was uneven. Although the monsoon started on May 24, it took some time to cover the country fully, leading to dry spells.

Currently, the IMD has issued alerts for heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh, where cloudbursts and flash floods have been reported. An orange alert has been issued for the state, indicating the potential for severe weather. Heavy rainfall is also expected in East Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Punjab in the coming days. Specifically, East Rajasthan might see extremely heavy rainfall on July 3.

In the South, heavy rainfall is forecasted for Coastal and South Interior Karnataka on July 3. Kerala and Mahe are also expected to experience heavy rains during this period. The IMD has warned of possible flash floods and landslides, urging people to stay vigilant.

Due to the heavy rains, the pilgrimage to Kedarnath has been temporarily suspended following a landslide caused by the downpour. The road to the temple has been blocked by debris, prompting authorities to halt the yatra. Some pilgrims were trapped but were rescued safely.

In conclusion, while the forecast suggests beneficial rainfall for agriculture, it is crucial for residents in affected states to remain cautious and prepared for potential hazards. Stay updated with local weather reports and heed any warnings issued by the IMD.
