The Uttar Pradesh government is making a significant move to boost potato farming in the state. They have approved the establishment of the International Potato Centre (IPC) in Agra. This centre will be a regional branch of the renowned IPC located in Lima, Peru. The government has allotted 10 hectares of land for this purpose, free of cost. The IPC will receive funding of Rs 111.5 crore from the government. This initiative aims to improve farmer incomes and increase potato yields.

The IPC in Agra will focus on potato and sweet potato productivity. It will provide farmers with access to advanced technology and superior seed varieties. The centre will also collaborate with global agencies to implement best practices in potato farming. The Minister of State for Horticulture, Shri Dinesh Pratap Singh, emphasised that this project aligns with the government’s vision to double farmers’ incomes.

During a recent review meeting, the Minister stated that the IPC will significantly enhance the quality and yield of potatoes grown in Agra. He mentioned that the centre will be the fourth IPC facility worldwide, following those in Peru, Kenya, and China. This is a proud moment for Agra and Uttar Pradesh, placing them at the forefront of potato research in South Asia.

The centre will house germplasm facilities essential for potato processing and export. This will further enhance the value chain of the crop. The establishment of this centre is expected to create new job opportunities in the region, particularly in production, processing, and marketing of potatoes.

A delegation from the IPC board is expected to visit the Singna site in Agra in the coming months. They will review the logistical and environmental aspects of the project. The access route for scientists and personnel will pass through the Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary. Special permissions have been granted to ensure minimal disturbance to the sanctuary’s ecosystem. The government will construct a fully automated electronic gate to manage access.

The Horticulture Department will oversee the construction of the gate and ensure that strict environmental standards are followed. Only battery-operated vehicles will be allowed to travel within the sanctuary area. This regulation is crucial to protect the delicate ecosystem while facilitating the research centre’s operations.

The government has also submitted a proposal to upgrade the existing Government Potato Seed Production Farm. This effort aims to strengthen local capabilities and enhance the overall infrastructure supporting potato farming in the region.

Key figures in the agricultural sector attended the review meeting, including representatives from the IPC and senior officials from the Horticulture Department. Their participation highlights the collaborative effort behind this ambitious project. The focus remains on increasing food security, improving farmer incomes, and creating jobs through enhanced potato production.

This investment reflects the government’s commitment to improving agricultural practices and ensuring sustainable development in the potato sector. As the IPC prepares to establish its presence in Agra, it promises to bring new opportunities for farmers and contribute positively to the agricultural landscape of Uttar Pradesh.
