This World Environment Day, we celebrate the inspiring journey of Haricharan Oraon from Jharkhand, who has transformed his life through sustainable farming practices. Haricharan grew up in Dhurleta village, Ranchi, where opportunities were scarce and his family faced financial hardships. He had to leave school after the eighth grade and worked as a farm labourer in Punjab for over a decade. Despite the challenges, Haricharan was determined to change his circumstances. Upon returning to his village, he decided to reclaim his land and start afresh. However, he faced the difficulties of outdated farming techniques and limited resources. His breakthrough came when he was introduced to climate-smart agriculture through Transform Rural India’s Millionaire Farmer Development Programme (MFDP). This programme aimed to uplift marginalised farmers by teaching them sustainable farming methods. Haricharan learned that farming should work with nature, not against it. He understood the harm caused by chemical fertilizers and pesticides and embraced organic farming practices. With guidance from the programme, he began using protected farming techniques. This involved growing crops under nets to protect them from wild animals like monkeys and harsh weather conditions. His first success was growing cucumbers, which brought him substantial profits. Encouraged, he expanded his farming activities to include capsicum, cauliflower, and various other vegetables. Haricharan’s income grew significantly, from Rs 2.65 lakh to Rs 10.75 lakh in just four years, while keeping his expenses low. His success inspired other farmers in his village, leading to a collective shift towards sustainable farming. They built irrigation systems and ponds to improve water access, ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability. Haricharan also took it upon himself to train fellow farmers, sharing his knowledge and promoting eco-friendly practices. The community began to thrive, moving away from subsistence farming towards a more sustainable approach. His journey highlights how one individual can create a ripple effect in their community, fostering a culture of sustainability and innovation. This World Environment Day serves as a reminder that true change begins at the grassroots level. Haricharan’s story is a testament to the power of determination, education, and community collaboration. By adopting sustainable farming practices, he has not only improved his own life but also contributed to the well-being of his entire village. As we reflect on environmental challenges, let Haricharan’s success inspire us to support sustainable practices in agriculture and beyond. Together, we can work towards a greener future for all.
