Delhi is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to nearly 45 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the city, warning residents to take precautions. On June 10, temperatures reached a high of 43.8°C at the Safdarjung observatory, which is significantly above the seasonal average. Some areas, like Ayanagar, recorded even higher temperatures, peaking at 45.5°C. This heatwave has created challenging conditions for many residents, especially vulnerable groups like the elderly and children. The high temperatures have also pushed the ‘feels-like’ temperature to a scorching 47.1°C due to humidity levels ranging between 24% and 39%.
The IMD forecasts that these extreme temperatures will last until at least June 12, with daytime highs expected to remain around the 45°C mark. Nighttime temperatures are also unusually warm, staying close to 29°C. As a result, many people are struggling to cool down, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
In addition to the heat, Delhi’s air quality has worsened, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 215, which falls into the ‘poor’ category. This poor air quality, combined with high temperatures, poses further health risks.
The IMD is predicting some relief starting from June 12, as light rain and thunderstorms are expected in parts of the city. These weather changes could bring gusty winds between 30 and 40 km/h, which may help to lower the temperatures slightly. However, residents are advised to remain cautious and continue to take protective measures against the heat.
The heatwave is not just limited to Delhi; surrounding regions are also facing similar conditions. The IMD has noted that heatwave conditions may persist across Northwest India for the next few days. In some parts of Rajasthan, temperatures have reached as high as 47.4°C.
Local authorities are urging people to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak heat hours, stay hydrated, and check on those who may be more vulnerable to the heat. It is essential to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions during this extreme weather period.
As the city prepares for possible storms and rain over the weekend, residents hope for a quick end to this heatwave. Until then, it is crucial to follow safety guidelines to protect health and well-being during this challenging weather spell.
