Nituben Patel from Rajkot, Gujarat, is making waves in Indian agriculture. She has been named the ‘Richest Farmer of India’ at the recent MFOI Awards 2024. This award highlights her remarkable work in sustainable farming and rural empowerment. Nituben’s story is inspiring for many women in agriculture. She was born into a non-agricultural family, yet her love for nature and soil led her to farming.

Nituben is not just a farmer; she is a champion of natural farming. Her dedication to this cause has helped her create a movement for green and inclusive agriculture. She founded the Sajeevan Foundation, which focuses on environmental conservation and sustainable practices. One of her key projects is called ‘Plastic-Free Rajkot.’ In this initiative, she distributes 10,000 cotton bags each year to reduce plastic use.

Nituben also conducts tree plantation drives, planting 1,000 trees annually with school students. This effort aims to raise awareness about the environment among young people. She has educated over 10,000 farmers about organic farming through her ‘Rushi Krushi’ initiative. This program promotes pesticide-free farming, showing farmers how to adopt sustainable practices.

At the MFOI Awards, Nituben was celebrated not only for her achievements but also for her role in empowering women in agriculture. The event took place from December 1-3, 2024, at the IARI Grounds in New Delhi. It gathered over 1,000 participants, including policymakers, industry leaders, and progressive farmers. From a total of 22,000 nominations, only 400 individuals were honored. This recognition sends a powerful message that women are vital in the agricultural sector.

Nituben’s achievements demonstrate what women can achieve in a field traditionally dominated by men. Her journey is a testament to the transformative impact of women in farming. The MFOI Awards, organized by Krishi Jagran and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, aim to celebrate farmers’ contributions to agriculture. Nituben’s success story inspires others to dream big and realize their potential in farming.

Nituben’s innovative practices have led to the establishment of 84 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in just 45 days. These FPOs connect organic farmers with state government initiatives. This has significantly improved the livelihood of many farmers in Gujarat. Additionally, her Farm-to-Plate model is setting benchmarks for agricultural entrepreneurs in the region.

Guided by her mentor, the late Shri Dipakbhai Sachade, Nituben embraced modern farming techniques. She transformed agricultural waste into valuable resources, enhancing productivity. Her leadership has positioned Gujarat as a leader in natural farming, inspiring farmers across India to adopt sustainable practices.

The MFOI Awards reflect the growing recognition of farmers’ roles in shaping the future of agriculture. As leaders like Nituben pave the way, Indian farming is entering a new era of innovation and resilience. Her story encourages every farmer to dream bigger and redefine their future in agriculture.
