Farmer’s Plight: Loan Pressure Leads to Tragic Suicide in Chandrapur

A heart-wrenching incident has shaken Chandrapur, Maharashtra. Yashoda Abaji Rathod, a 68-year-old farmer, tragically took her own life due to immense pressure from a bank to repay a loan. This sad event unfolded in Naiknagar, Chandanwahi, in the Rajuara district.

Yashoda lived with her two sons and their families. For several years, she had a loan from the Chandrapur Central Cooperative Bank, Gadchandur branch. Bank officials reportedly hounded her for repayment, causing significant mental distress. Adding to her troubles, she had also borrowed money from private lenders (moneylenders) for farming needs.

The financial burden on the entire family increased as both her sons had also taken loans for agricultural purposes. Unfortunately, consistent crop failures over the past few years meant there was no income from farming to help repay these debts. This year, their cotton crop was completely destroyed due to heavy rains, leading to yet another devastating loss.

The continuous losses, mounting debts, and constant pressure from the bank and moneylenders took a heavy toll on Yashoda’s mental well-being. Overwhelmed by the unbearable stress, she tragically ended her life by hanging herself in her home on Wednesday afternoon.

Upon receiving information about the incident, police from the Rajuara Police Station rushed to the scene. They conducted an initial inspection (panchnama) and sent the body for a post-mortem examination to the Rajuara Sub-District Hospital. Further investigations are currently underway by the police. This unfortunate event has cast a shadow of grief over the entire Naiknagar area, with residents expressing deep sorrow and concern over the farmers’ struggles.
