Farmers Awarded ₹76,800 Per Acre for Spurious Sunflower Seeds in Patiala

Farmers in Patiala have won a significant victory, with the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ordering compensation of ₹76,800 per acre for crop losses. These losses were due to the supply of spurious sunflower seeds in 2022. The Commission also awarded an additional ₹35,000 to each farmer for the mental distress caused by the incident.

The seeds were sold by Sham Trading Company and Rajpura Pesticides, both located in Rajpura. The manufacturer of these faulty seeds was identified as M/s Synergene Crop Innovations, based in Hyderabad. Investigations revealed that the manufacturer’s licence had expired in 2019, meaning they were not legally permitted to sell seeds in Punjab.

The case, which concluded on August 4, 2025, was brought before the Patiala Consumer Commission. This ruling comes after farmers had lodged complaints with the Punjab Chief Minister and the SSP of Patiala. These complaints led to the formation of a special committee to look into the matter.

Initially, this specialist committee had suggested compensation of ₹17,000 per acre for 20 farmers who had reported losses across 88 acres. However, twelve of these farmers decided to pursue their case further in the consumer court.

This decision highlights the importance of consumer protection for farmers. It also underscores the need for strict regulation and quality control in the agricultural input supply chain. Farmers rely on quality seeds for their livelihoods, and any failure in this regard can have severe financial consequences.

The compensation amount reflects the considerable losses incurred by the farmers. Losing an entire crop due to substandard seeds can be financially devastating. The additional compensation for mental agony acknowledges the stress and hardship farmers face when their efforts are undermined by fraudulent practices.

This case serves as a warning to seed suppliers and manufacturers to ensure they are providing genuine and high-quality products. It also encourages farmers to be aware of their rights and to seek legal recourse when faced with such issues. The intervention of the consumer commission provides a crucial mechanism for redressal and accountability.

As the agricultural sector continues to be a cornerstone of the Indian economy, ensuring the integrity of agricultural inputs is paramount. Cases like this emphasize the need for continuous monitoring and enforcement of standards. The success of these farmers in Patiala is a step towards greater fairness and transparency in the agricultural market, protecting the hard work and investment of those who feed the nation.
