Farmer Injured in Elephant Attack: Association Demands Higher Compensation

A farmer from the Thalavadi Hills has suffered serious injuries after a wild elephant attack. The incident has led to the Thalavadi Farmers Association urging the government to provide substantial relief. The victim, Aalmadhan, was attacked on December 13 while returning from his farm. He sustained severe injuries to his head, internal organs, lungs, heart, bones, and urinary system.

He was first taken to the Chamarajanagar Institute of Medical Sciences and is now receiving treatment at the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute in Karnataka. The association president, S. Kannaiyan, has written to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, requesting ₹5 lakh in financial aid from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund.

Mr. Kannaiyan highlighted the poor financial situation of Aalmadhan’s family. He pointed out that current welfare schemes offer a maximum of ₹59,000 for injuries. The association believes this amount is not enough for tribal families facing such severe hardship.

The association is calling for a more compassionate and improved compensation policy for cases involving human-wildlife conflict. They propose compensation amounts of ₹5 lakh for severe injuries, ₹2 lakh for partial injuries, and ₹20 lakh in the tragic event of a fatality.

The letter stressed that people affected by human-wildlife conflict experience not only physical harm but also significant emotional distress. The association has appealed to the Chief Minister to review these demands promptly and issue suitable orders to ensure better support for victims.
